Best MSW Programs in Kentucky for 2027: The True-Cost Census, Calculated

Kentucky has 9 verified MSW programs — and every one is fully CSWE-accredited. For 4 of them, we calculated estimated total tuition from officially published rates: traditional-track estimates run $36,420 (Western Kentucky) to $51,000 (Louisville, a planning estimate), while advanced standing runs $19,200 (Campbellsville) to $25,500 (Louisville). This census shows every program, every formula, and every source — so you compare true cost instead of sticker price.

What a "true-cost census" means

True-cost census

A ledger of what a Kentucky MSW actually costs, program by program: estimated total tuition = the university's published per-credit rate × its published required credits, worked out separately for each track. If a school hasn't published one of those two numbers, the cell reads not published — we don't fill it in.

A per-credit rate by itself tells you almost nothing: two programs at $600 a credit can differ by $10,000 once you multiply by their credit totals. What sets your bill is the pair — rate × required credits — and whether your BSW qualifies you for the shorter advanced standing track.

Nine Kentucky programs are in this census. Four publish the inputs, so four carry calculated estimates with the formula and the source link beside each one. Five don't publish a program-level rate, so five read 'not published' — a blank we'd rather show than fill with a guess.

Reading the table: estimates are tuition only and exclude fees, books, and living costs. Louisville’s figure is a planning estimate built from the university’s standard online graduate rate, not a published MSSW rate. "Not published" is a missing-data label, not a price judgment — it means neither the rate nor the credit total could be verified.

How each estimate is calculated

One recipe, every figure: the school's published per-credit graduate rate for the stated year and residency, times the school's published credit total for the track, with the multiplication shown. Fees, books, and living costs stay out of every estimate so programs compare cleanly.

Worked example — UK regular standing: 60 credits × $790 per credit (2025–26, in-state for all online students) = $47,400 estimated tuition.

Estimated total tuition = published per-credit tuition × published required credits
Treat every figure as a budgeting tool, not a quote. Universities reprice annually, and residency, fees, and aid move the final number — confirm the current rate with the school before you enroll.

Why accreditation decides the census

In Kentucky, CSWE accreditation is the gatekeeper to the CSW, LSW, and LCSW licenses issued by the Kentucky Board of Social Work — the reason most students enroll. All 9 programs in this census are fully accredited, which is why the census can focus on cost, format, and fit rather than credential risk.

Kentucky State University operates an MSW but is excluded from this census: the university’s own catalog discloses that its program is "not currently accredited by CSWE." An unaccredited program is not ranked here — that is an editorial decision, not an oversight.

Every profile carries its cost exhibit, accreditation evidence, confirmed formats, admissions notes, and source links.

Frequently asked questions

How many CSWE-accredited MSW programs are in Kentucky?

Nine. This census verifies 9 CSWE-accredited MSW programs in Kentucky — every program in the census is fully accredited, with no programs in candidacy. Kentucky State University also operates an MSW, but its own catalog discloses it is not currently CSWE-accredited, so it is excluded from the census.

What is the cheapest MSW in Kentucky?

Among programs with verified cost inputs, Western Kentucky University has the lowest traditional-track estimate — $36,420 (60 credits × $607/resident credit). For advanced standing, Campbellsville University is lowest at $19,200. Louisville’s figures ($51,000 / $25,500) are planning estimates built from the university’s standard online graduate rate, not published MSSW prices.

How does this site calculate the tuition figures?

Published per-credit rate × published required credits, worked out per track — e.g., Kentucky traditional: 60 × $790 = $47,400. Each figure carries its rate year, residency, and source links. Where a school didn’t publish the inputs, the cell reads "not published" instead of a guess.

Does a Kentucky MSW qualify me for social work licensure?

A CSWE-accredited MSW meets the education requirement for Kentucky’s licenses: CSW (MSW, no exam), LSW (MSW plus the ASWB master’s exam), and LCSW (MSW plus two years of post-master’s supervised clinical experience — including 200 documented supervision hours per 201 KAR 23:025 — plus the ASWB clinical exam), all through the Kentucky Board of Social Work.

Are there online MSW programs in Kentucky?

Yes — eight of the nine census programs confirm online options: Kentucky, Louisville, Western Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Campbellsville, Brescia, Eastern Kentucky, and Pikeville. Only Spalding is campus-only in confirmed sources. Field education is completed in person at approved sites. See our online MSW guide for details.
