The Kentucky MSW True-Cost Census: Every Program, Calculated
Sticker prices lie by omission. This census calculates estimated total tuition for all 9 Kentucky MSW programs — published rate × published credits, track by track — with every formula and source shown, and honest labels where inputs were never published.
Traditional track: estimated total tuition
The traditional track is the full MSW for students without a BSW — 60 credits at most Kentucky programs. Each estimate below multiplies the school's published per-credit rate by its published credit total; the arithmetic sits beside every number.
| Program | Track | Published rate | Estimated tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kentucky | Regular standing 60 credits | $790 / credit (2025–26, All online students (UK charges in-state tuition for all online social work students)) | $47,400 |
| Louisville | Regular standing 60 credits | $850 / credit (current published, Online students (standard rate; program exceptions apply)) | $51,000 |
| WKU | Traditional 60 credits | $607 / credit (Fall 2025 / Spring 2026, Kentucky resident) | $36,420 |
| NKU | Standard 60 credits | — | Not published |
| Campbellsville | Traditional 60 credits | $640 / credit (current published, All students (single published rate)) | $38,400 |
| Brescia | Two-year 60 credits | — | Not published |
| EKU | Generalist (regular standing) 48 credits | — | Not published |
| UPike | Regular standing 60 credits | — | Not published |
| Spalding | Not published | — | Not published |
| Verdict: among programs with published inputs, Western Kentucky ($36,420) is the lowest traditional-track estimate; Louisville ($51,000, a planning estimate) is the highest. The other five programs stay blank: no published rate, no estimate, no guess. | |||
Advanced standing: estimated total tuition
Advanced standing is the shortened track for BSW holders — 30 to 33 credits in Kentucky instead of 60. It is the single biggest cost lever in this census: same per-credit rate, roughly half the credits, roughly half the bill.
| Program | Track | Published rate | Estimated tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kentucky | Advanced standing 30 credits | $790 / credit | $23,700 |
| Louisville | Advanced standing 30 credits | $850 / credit | $25,500 |
| WKU | Advanced standing 33 credits | $607 / credit | $20,031 |
| NKU | Advanced standing 30 credits | — | Not published |
| Campbellsville | Advanced standing 30 credits | $640 / credit | $19,200 |
| Brescia | Advanced standing 30 credits | — | Not published |
| EKU | Advanced standing 30 credits | — | Not published |
| UPike | Advanced standing 30 credits | — | Not published |
| Spalding | Advanced standing (advanced generalist) 31 credits | — | Not published |
| Verdict: advanced standing cuts the estimated bill roughly in half everywhere it is offered — e.g., Campbellsville drops from $38,400 to $19,200. For BSW holders, no other decision moves the number more. | |||
The advanced-standing savings, calculated
The dollar value of a BSW is concrete in Kentucky. At the University of Kentucky: (60 − 30) × $790 = $23,700 in estimated tuition savings. At Western Kentucky: (60 − 33) × $607 = $16,389. At Campbellsville: (60 − 30) × $640 = $19,200.
Where we could not calculate
Five programs — Northern Kentucky, Brescia, Eastern Kentucky, Pikeville, and Spalding — did not have a published per-credit rate we could verify, so no estimate is shown. That blank is missing data, not a judgment — ask the program for its current figures.
Schools reprice every academic year, so inputs go stale fast. Every estimate on this page carries its rate year; treat any figure older than the current catalog year as a starting point, not a quote.
Frequently asked questions
Which Kentucky MSW has the lowest estimated tuition?
Among programs with published inputs, Western Kentucky University: $36,420 estimated resident tuition for the 60-credit traditional track (Fall 2025 / Spring 2026 rate of $607/credit), or $20,031 for advanced standing. For advanced standing, Campbellsville is lowest at $19,200. The other five programs can’t be ranked on cost — no published inputs, no estimate.
How much does advanced standing save in Kentucky?
Roughly half the tuition bill. Calculated examples: Kentucky saves $23,700 (60→30 credits at $790/credit); Western Kentucky saves $16,389 (60→33 at $607); Campbellsville saves $19,200 (60→30 at $640). Only a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program unlocks the track.
Why do some programs show "not published" instead of a cost?
We calculate estimates only from officially published per-credit rates and credit totals. Where a university had not published both inputs together, we label the gap rather than inventing a number.
Do these estimates include fees?
No. Every figure is tuition only — fees, books, field costs, and living expenses stay out so the programs compare cleanly. Each profile spells out exactly what its own estimate leaves out.
