Kentucky MSW FAQs

Straight answers to what prospective Kentucky MSW students ask most — cost, accreditation, online study, licensing, and admissions — each backed by the verified census.

Frequently asked questions

How many MSW programs does Kentucky have?

Nine verified — every one fully CSWE-accredited. The five publics (Kentucky, Louisville, Western Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky) and four private nonprofits (Spalding, Campbellsville, Brescia, Pikeville) each get their own profile in the census. Kentucky State University also operates an MSW, but its own catalog discloses it is not currently CSWE-accredited, so it is excluded.

What does an MSW cost in Kentucky?

Among the 4 programs with verified published inputs, estimated tuition for a traditional track runs from $36,420 (Western Kentucky) to $51,000 (Louisville — a planning estimate built from the university’s standard online graduate rate, not a published MSSW price). Advanced standing runs $19,200 (Campbellsville) to $25,500 (Louisville, planning). Estimates are tuition only: fees, books, and living costs aren’t in them, and each carries its rate year.

How do you work out the tuition estimate?

Published per-credit tuition times published required credits, worked out track by track — e.g., Kentucky traditional: 60 × $790 = $47,400. Where a university doesn’t publish a program-level rate — NKU, Brescia, EKU, Pikeville, Spalding — we mark it "not published" rather than inventing one.

Does accreditation matter for Kentucky licensure?

Yes. The Kentucky Board of Social Work requires an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program for the CSW, LSW, and LCSW. All 9 census programs are fully accredited; the one Kentucky MSW that isn’t (Kentucky State) is excluded from the census.

Can I earn a Kentucky MSW online?

Yes — eight of the nine census programs confirm online options: Kentucky, Louisville, Western Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Campbellsville, Brescia, Eastern Kentucky, and Pikeville. Only Spalding is campus-only in confirmed sources. Field education is always done in person at an approved agency, wherever you live.

I already have a BSW. Is there a shorter route?

Yes — advanced standing, if your BSW came from a CSWE-accredited program. Kentucky’s advanced track is 30 credits ($23,700 estimated), Western Kentucky’s is 33 credits ($20,031), and Campbellsville’s is 30 credits ($19,200). Traditional tracks run 60 credits (48–62 at EKU) and about two years.

How long does a Kentucky MSW take?

About two years full-time on a traditional track, or as little as 12 months with advanced standing — Campbellsville’s advanced standing program completes in as few as two semesters. Most programs also run part-time plans for people working full-time.

Do Kentucky MSW programs require the GRE?

The University of Kentucky’s online MSW states no GRE or work experience is required. Requirements vary by school and cycle, and the census only records admissions criteria where they’re officially stated — check each program’s admissions page for the current cycle before you apply.

How do I get licensed in Kentucky after the MSW?

Three levels through the Kentucky Board of Social Work: the CSW (accredited MSW, no exam), the LSW (accredited MSW plus the ASWB Master’s exam), and the LCSW for independent clinical practice (MSW plus two years of post-master’s supervised clinical experience — including 200 documented supervision hours per 201 KAR 23:025 — plus the ASWB Clinical exam). The full path is laid out on our licensing page.

What kind of work can an MSW get in Kentucky?

The steady demand sits in behavioral health and addictions treatment, school social work, hospitals and health systems, child welfare, and rural clinics across the Commonwealth. The LCSW opens independent clinical practice. Nationally, the BLS reports 2025 median pay of $61,780 for social workers ($67,880 in healthcare, $60,280 in mental health and substance abuse) — check the BLS state profiles for Kentucky-specific figures.

How do I know your numbers are right?

Every tuition estimate shows its arithmetic and links the tuition schedule and graduate catalog it came from. Accreditation is checked against the CSWE directory. This edition was last verified in October 2026 — tuition resets each academic year, so confirm current rates with the university before you enroll.

Which Kentucky MSW is the best — or the cheapest?

Our published ranking puts the University of Kentucky at #1 — fully accredited, public, campus and online, with verified tuition. The cheapest verified traditional-track estimate is Western Kentucky at $36,420 — but aid, assistantships, and the real cost of driving to a campus across the state change the math. Use the profiles to compare cost, accreditation, and fit; this site’s job is honest inputs, not picking for you.
